The IKEA story began in 1943 in the small village of Agunnaryd in Sweden, when founder Ingvar Kamprad was just 17. Since then, the IKEA Group has grown into a major retail experience with 128,000 co-workers in 24 countries/territories generating annual sales of more than 21.1 billion euros.

IKEA Group figures at a glance
2009 was a good year for the IKEA Group despite the world economic downturn. Sales rose by 1.4 percent and we opened 15 stores in 11 countries. We will continue to expand, although at a somewhat slower pace, and expect to open around 15 new stores in 2010, most of them in Europe.
Sales
There are 231 IKEA stores in 24 countries stocking everything for home furnishing under one roof. Last year 522 million customers visited an IKEA store, gaining inspiration from our displays which show IKEA products in actual room settings. To read more, please visit IKEA Group stores.

Germany 16%, USA 10%, UK 9%, France 9% and Sweden 7%.
Purchasing
IKEA has 41 trading service offices in 30 countries. This allows us to be close to our suppliers - about 1,380 in 54 countries - so we can monitor production, test new ideas, negotiate prices and check quality while keeping an eye on social and working conditions.
Top five purchasing countries
China 21%, Poland 17%, Italy 8%, Sweden 6% and Germany 6%.
Co-workers
The IKEA Group has 127,800 co-workers spread across functions such as purchasing, distribution, whole-sale, range, retail, support functions and the Swedwood Group.
Distribution
IKEA has 27 distribution centres and 11 customer distribution centres in 16 countries. Using flat packs, transporting goods where possible by rail and sea, and utilising fuel-saving techniques allows us to be cost-effective and environmentally friendly.
Range
Today's IKEA range consists of home furnishing articles, designed to be functional and good looking but at a low price. Last year more than 200 million copies of the catalogue were printed in 52 editions and 27 languages.
